The FX6 remains one of our primary cameras for interviews, promotional films, documentaries and commercial productions. The FX5 isn’t replacing it. Instead, it gives us another professional cinema camera that integrates perfectly into the way we already work.
A Perfect Match for the FX6
One of the biggest benefits of the FX5 is how naturally it complements the FX6.
Both cameras share Sony’s Cinema Line colour science, meaning footage matches extremely well. Whether we’re filming interviews with two cameras, covering live events or capturing multiple angles during a promotional shoot, colour matching is faster and more consistent during editing.
Both cameras also use Sony E-mount lenses, allowing us to swap lenses between bodies in seconds. From wide-angle gimbal work to long telephoto interviews, every lens in our Sony kit works across both cameras, giving us maximum flexibility without carrying duplicate equipment.
A Better Camera for Gimbal Work
While the FX6 is a fantastic production camera, its larger body makes it less practical on a gimbal.
The more compact FX5 is far better suited to stabilised shooting, allowing us to move quickly around businesses, offices, factories and construction sites while capturing smooth cinematic footage.
That means more dynamic movement, cleaner tracking shots and a wider variety of visuals without slowing production down.
Improved Autofocus
Sony has continued to refine its autofocus technology, and the FX5 benefits from the company’s latest AI-powered subject recognition system. It can recognise people, faces and eyes with even greater accuracy, maintaining focus as subjects move naturally around the frame.
For corporate productions, where contributors are often not professional presenters, dependable autofocus means fewer interruptions and more natural performances.
Greater Dynamic Range
Lighting conditions are rarely perfect.
Factories, warehouses, offices and industrial facilities often contain bright windows alongside darker working areas.
The FX5’s new stacked full-frame sensor delivers outstanding dynamic range, allowing it to retain more detail in both highlights and shadows. Combined with Sony’s latest sensor technology and Dual Gain architecture, it produces exceptionally clean images across a wide range of lighting conditions.
That gives us greater flexibility during colour grading and helps produce a polished final image with more natural contrast.
Open Gate Recording Creates More Content
One of the most exciting additions is Sony’s introduction of 5K Open Gate recording to the Cinema Line.
Rather than recording only a widescreen image, the FX5 captures the full sensor area.
For our clients, that means one filmed sequence can be adapted into:
- Landscape videos for websites and YouTube
- Square videos for Facebook
- Vertical content for Instagram Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts
without needing separate filming.

Professional Recording Options
The FX5 introduces internal X-OCN RAW recording for productions that require maximum image quality and grading flexibility. It also offers high frame rates for cinematic slow motion and professional recording formats suitable for demanding commercial work.
Most businesses won’t specifically ask for RAW recording, but having those capabilities means we’re equipped for larger commercial productions whenever they’re needed.
