PLANNING A CARDIFF SHOOT

Start with the material the finished video actually needs

The biggest production problem is rarely the camera. It is trying to fit interviews, workplace footage, products, multiple locations and extra social content into a day without deciding what matters most.

Before filming, we separate the must-have material from the useful extras, identify which contributors need quiet interview time, work out where lighting and sound can be set up, and plan the order around access, meetings and live activity.

That preparation protects the important footage first. If the schedule changes, you still leave with the material needed to build the main film rather than a collection of attractive shots with gaps in the story.

In Cardiff, that can mean working around busy offices, public buildings, live events, industrial sites or venues where access is limited to particular times. We plan the filming order around those practical constraints so interviews, key sequences and supporting footage are captured when the opportunity is there.

It also means thinking beyond the main edit. If the same filming day can provide extra interview clips, vertical social content, photographs or additional footage for future campaigns, we plan for that from the start. The aim is to leave the shoot with a useful bank of material rather than discovering during the edit that something important was missed.

Professional interview filming setup for Cardiff video production

One production, more useful content

A Cardiff filming day can create the main film plus useful supporting material for other channels.

Main film: a clear story for your website, presentation, campaign or internal communications.

Shorter edits: focused versions for social media, recruitment and individual services.

Photography & aerials: stills and drone footage can often be captured during the same visit.

REAL CARDIFF PRODUCTIONS

Events, panels, performances and business filming

We are regularly hired by agencies, organisations and production teams to film events across Cardiff, including panel discussions at the Senedd, business shows, seminars and presentations at venues such as the Village Hotel Cardiff.

We also film live performances and concert events, including music hall and stage productions at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, where camera positions, sound recording and audience sightlines all need to be considered carefully.

Assignments can range from recording a single talk or performance to multi-camera coverage of panels, speakers, musicians and audience questions, together with shorter highlight films, interviews or social clips from the same event.

Marketing video for a mail-order business near Cardiff

We produced a marketing video for Trophy Finder, based just outside Cardiff, to show the breadth of products and services available through its mail-order business.

Rather than using an interview-led approach, the film was built around a professional voice-over, allowing the visuals to concentrate on the products, personalisation options, ordering process and range of work available to customers.

This approach works well for businesses with a large product range because narration can guide the viewer through different services while the camera concentrates on detail, variety and how orders are produced and supplied.

CARDIFF VIDEO PRODUCTION FAQ

Useful answers before you book a filming day

Planning, pricing, permissions, interviews, delivery and what can be captured from one production.

event video shot by FX6
How much does video production in Cardiff cost?

Most straightforward business video projects currently start from £895 for a half-day solo production with an agreed edit. The final quote changes with filming time, crew size, locations, editing, graphics and the number of finished videos. See our video production pricing for the current guide. A smaller brief may be quoted differently, but pricing should be tied to the work required rather than an unexplained “price per video”.

Why can editing take longer than the filming?

A filming day produces raw material, not a finished story. Post-production can involve reviewing hours of footage, selecting interview answers, building structure, synchronising cameras and sound, colour correction, audio clean-up, captions, graphics, music, brand changes and different delivery versions. A ten-minute film with several contributors can easily require more work in the edit than it did on location.

Do we need a permit to film in Cardiff city centre or public spaces?

Sometimes. Filming inside your own office or private premises is normally a matter for the property owner or venue, but commercial filming on Cardiff Council streets or council-owned spaces can require permission. Locations such as Central Square, Cardiff Bay public areas, parks and other council land may therefore need checking before the shoot.

Can you film an event and make a highlights film as well?

Yes. Conferences, launches, panel talks and business events can be recorded in full while separate footage is gathered for a shorter highlights edit. If both need strong coverage at the same time, a second camera or operator may be worthwhile. See our event filming and live streaming services.

How do revisions work?

We provide an online review route so feedback can be tied to exact points in the film. The fastest process is for your team to combine comments into one agreed list before sending them back. Structural changes are easiest early in the edit; changing the entire direction after graphics, sound and multiple versions have been finished naturally takes longer.

What information do you need to give me an accurate quote?

The most useful details are the filming location, preferred date, who will appear, what needs to be shown, the intended audience, approximate finished length, number of deliverables and deadline. If you already have a script, storyboard, brand guide or example video, send that too. A rough brief is fine if you need help shaping the rest.

Can one Cardiff shoot create several videos?

Yes. This is often the best use of the budget. A single visit can produce a main film plus shorter interview extracts, social edits, recruitment material, product clips or internal versions. The key is deciding those outputs before filming so shots are framed and recorded with each use in mind.

Can you film interviews in a normal Cardiff office?

Usually, yes. We look for a room with enough depth for the background, controllable noise, manageable daylight and space for lights. Glass meeting rooms can look good but often create reflections and poor sound; kitchens and open-plan areas are usually noisy. A quiet meeting room for the interview plus separate workplace footage often gives the best result.

Can drone footage be added to a Cardiff production?

Yes, where the location, weather, airspace and permissions allow. Cardiff has busy urban areas and controlled airspace considerations, so aerial filming should be checked rather than assumed. Where a flight is suitable, drone footage can be useful for premises, construction, property, venues and wider location context. See drone filming.

Can we have the raw footage?

Yes, if agreed. Raw 4K camera files can be very large, so an SSD is often more practical than an online transfer. Raw footage is supplied as recorded unless you also request organisation, synchronisation, conversion, colour work or an editor-ready string-out. Tell us before filming if your internal editor needs a particular codec, frame rate or folder structure.

Can a half-day shoot be enough?

Yes, when the brief is genuinely contained: one location, a small number of contributors, limited setup changes and a clearly defined output. A half day becomes false economy when too many interviews, room moves, products or supporting shots are squeezed into it. In that case a full day usually gives the editor much better material and reduces pressure on your staff.

How far in advance should we book filming in Cardiff?

For a simple office shoot, availability may exist at short notice. Larger productions need more lead time for contributors, locations, crew and equipment. If commercial filming is planned on Cardiff Council streets or council-owned spaces, permit lead times also need to be considered, so early notice is useful.

What if our staff are nervous on camera?

That is extremely common. We can use a conversational interview rather than asking people to memorise a script, break answers into short sections, repeat lines where necessary and remove the interviewer in the edit. For tightly worded messages, a teleprompter can also be used. The aim is to make contributors understandable and comfortable rather than force a performance.

Can you provide subtitles, captions and Welsh-language versions?

Yes. Captions can be supplied burned into the video or as separate subtitle files. Welsh-language and multiple-version projects are best scoped before editing because translated titles, subtitles, voice-over and separate masters can multiply the number of deliverables. Confirming the languages and platforms early keeps the quote accurate.

How quickly can the finished video be delivered?

Turnaround depends on the amount of footage, number of edits, graphics, captions and how quickly feedback is returned. A simple project can move quickly; a multi-film campaign or technical training series needs more post-production and review time. If a fixed launch, conference or campaign date matters, tell us at quotation stage so the production and sign-off schedule can be built backwards from it.
